KATHMANDU: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined Truth Social, the social media platform owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

In his first post shortly after creating his account, Modi shared a photo taken during his 2019 U.S. visit, alongside Trump in Houston, Texas. In the post, Modi expressed his excitement at joining Truth Social, stating that he was “happy” to connect on the platform.

Trump, after losing the 2020 Presidential election to Joe Biden, faced accusations of inciting violence, leading major social media platforms like Twitter (now X) and Facebook to temporarily suspend his accounts. In response, Trump launched his own platform, Truth Social, in February 2022.

By Tuesday morning, over 21,500 users had already followed Modi on Truth Social. He currently follows Trump and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

In addition, Trump shared a link to an interview with Modi on the podcast hosted by Lex Friedman. During the interview, the Indian Prime Minister discussed a range of topics, including his life journey, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and India’s relationship with China.

In terms of functionality, Truth Social operates similarly to X, allowing users to post “truths” and send direct messages. Advertisements on the platform are referred to as “sponsored truths.”

Truth Social is owned by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which Trump converted into a public company in March 2024. He currently holds about 57% of the shares in the company.

The platform also has significant investments from Kuwait-based investment firm ARC Global Investments and some former competitors of Apprentice.

As of now, Trump has 9.28 million followers on Truth Social, compared to a massive 87 million followers on X. Despite its growing user base, Truth Social still lags behind its competitors, with its traffic and total user count significantly lower than platforms like X.

TMTG reported a loss of $400 million in 2024, and its market valuation currently stands at $4.45 billion.
