KATHMANDU: Voting is underway for the Student Union (FSU) election at the Dhaulagiri Multiple Campus, an affiliated campus of Tribhuvan University.

Election officer Govinda Gautam informed that the voting, which began at 8 AM, is progressing peacefully.

The campus, with 1,474 registered voters, is expecting a high voter turnout. Four booths have been set up to facilitate voting for both direct and proportional representation systems.

Gautam added that the election is being conducted smoothly and without any disruptions.

Campus chief, Professor Dr. Ram Prasad Upadhyaya, shared that this year’s FSU election has been notably peaceful compared to previous ones. “This time, there have been no serious disputes or conflicts between student organizations,” Upadhyaya remarked.

For the first time in the history of Dhulagiri Multiple Campus, two female candidates are leading two groups in the FSU election.

Asmin Sheikh, representing the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), and Srishti Acharya, leading the Nepal Students Union (NSU) panel, are competing for leadership.

After independent candidate Dipak Suvedi withdrew his candidacy, the election has become a two-way race. Both Acharya and Sheikh are currently pursuing postgraduate studies.

The election sees the joint panel of student organizations affiliated with UML, Maoist, Janamorcha, CPN-S, and RPP, going up against NSU in a direct contest.

Due to the campus’s significant political and social influence, the FSU election is being closely observed by political parties, civil society, and the general public.

Both the Nepali Congress and UML have elevated the SWU election to a matter of prestige. While the leadership of the FSU has traditionally been held by either Congress or UML, the Nepal Students Union (NSU) has held the position for the last four terms.
