KATHMANDU: Madhav Sapkota, a Member of Parliament from the CPN (Maoist Centre), has urged the government to take necessary legal and diplomatic measures to bring the body of Sindhupalchowk’s Sumina Tamang, who died in Iraq while working, back to Nepal.

Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, Sapkota also demanded that the government provide appropriate compensation to the deceased’s family.

Sumina Tamang, who had gone to Iraq two years ago in search of employment, passed away on the 2nd of Chait after collapsing while working at her employer’s house. She was rushed to the hospital, but despite treatment, she died.

Tamang, who had traveled to Iraq through illegal channels, had been denied clearance by airlines twice due to her serious health condition, resulting in the cancellation of her flight tickets. It is now expected to take about two months to repatriate her body to Nepal.

According to data from the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA), more than 20,000 Nepali workers are currently employed in Iraq, a country to which Nepal has imposed a ban on sending workers.
