KATHMANDU: A suicide car bomber targeted a convoy of buses carrying security forces in Nushki, a district in Balochistan, southwestern Pakistan on Sunday.

The attack resulted in the deaths of at least seven officers and two civilians, with ten others injured, some critically.

Following the bombing, separatist rebels opened fire on the buses.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the assault. In response, the military stated that operations in the area would continue to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This incident is part of a series of attacks by Baloch separatist groups in the region. For instance, in April 2024, armed assailants abducted and killed nine passengers in Nushki, claiming the victims were intelligence officials.

The BLA has also been implicated in various attacks, including a deadly train hijacking in February 2022.

The BLA has released footage purportedly showing the aftermath of the March 16 attack, though official casualty figures vary.

While the BLA claims 90 Pakistani army personnel were killed, Pakistani police report five officers dead and ten injured.

The BLA, demanding independence for Balochistan, has a history of insurgent activities in the region, contributing to ongoing instability.
