KATHMANDU:  The historic first central convention of the National Democratic Disabled Federation, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress, is set to take place on March 21 and 22.

During a press conference held on Sunday, Madhav Prasad Chamlagain, the coordinator of the publicity and promotion committee, announced that preparations for the convention have reached their final stages.

Chamlagai further shared that over 1,000 delegates from all 77 districts will participate in the event. He also highlighted that the conventions in 6 provinces, 72 districts, 160 federal electoral constituencies, 320 provincial assemblies, and most local levels have been successfully completed with enthusiasm.

The convention will be inaugurated by Sher Bahadur Deuba, the president of the Nepali Congress. Participants with various types of disabilities, including physical, visual, auditory, speech, intellectual, autism, hemophilia, mental health conditions, and multiple disabilities, will attend.

The federation has categorized members based on severity into four types: complete disability, high disability, moderate disability, and mild disability.

According to the federation’s constitution, the convention will elect a 51-member central committee.

The positions include one president, two vice-presidents (one for women and one for the open category), two general secretaries, 10 members from open categories (3 women), 10 members from different types of disabilities, and 14 representatives (2 women and 2 open category from each province), bringing the total number of elected members to 39.

The remaining 12 members will be nominated by the president, considering women’s representation and inclusivity.

Provincial presidents will be ex-officio members of the committee, and the treasurer and two assistant general secretaries will be selected by the executive committee.

To ensure the smooth conduct of the convention, the Nepali Congress formed a three-member steering committee, led by central member Madhu Acharya, with central members Madan Krishna Shrestha and Saraswati Bajimay also on the team.
