KATHMANDU: The Ward Chairperson of Pokhara Metropolitan City-21, Deepak Subedi, was attacked with a rod on Saturday by local resident Bhupendra Giri while he was attempting to prevent land encroachment in the Bajipokhari area.

The incident occurred when Subedi tried to halt the construction of a house on public land that was being illegally occupied.

Subedi, who was made aware of the encroachment, arrived at the scene to stop the construction.

Despite his warnings against building on public land, the construction continued, prompting him to involve the municipal police to intervene.

“I asked them to stop building on public land and even told them that we could send an amin (official) to inspect if necessary. However, they did not have any valid documents,” Suvedi explained. “This land is undeniably public, and I took the municipal police to prevent the illegal construction.”

As the municipal police were about to identify the encroached land, Bhupendra Giri called Subedi over to a corner. “He brought a rod and attacked me. I managed to stop the strike with my hand, and another person nearby helped prevent further harm,” Subedi recalled. “I did not suffer any injuries, but had the rod hit my head, the consequences could have been serious.”

The incident has been reported to the Baidam Ward Police Office.

The police are currently interrogating the suspect, Bhupendra Giri, regarding the attack, as confirmed by DSP Santosh Niraula of the Baidam Police Office.
