KATHMANDU:  The Chief Whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Gyan Bahadur Shahi, has criticized the current political system, claiming that it serves the interests of the powerful elites rather than the people.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Sunday, Shahi pointed out that every year, a significant amount—15 billion rupees—are spent just on maintaining government employees, leaders, and parliamentarians.

He also stated that both the Prime Minister and the Chair are not elected by the public but are selected by a limited number of lawmakers.

Shahi challenged the existing system, proposing a direct executive prime minister system. He highlighted the frequent changes in government since the establishment of the republic, mentioning that there have been 14 government transitions and 31 chief ministers in the country.

Additionally, he raised the question of who prevented the identification of the killer of Madan Bhandari, one of Nepal’s prominent leaders, implying unresolved issues in the political system.
