KATHMANDU: Ncell, Nepal’s private telecom operator, has announced plans to discontinue its 3G service by the end of 2025.

With the rapid expansion of 5G in countries like India and the shutdown of 3G in nations such as the U.S. and Australia, Ncell has decided to phase out its 3G service, which has been in operation since 2010, according to CEO Jabbor Kayumov.

The company has been providing 4G services in Nepal since 2017.

Meanwhile, the expansion of 5G in Nepal remains uncertain.

Despite receiving permission for trials, Nepal Telecom has not made significant progress, experts say.

Interestingly, recent reports show a rise in the use of 2G services in Nepal.

Ncell’s CEO stated that any decision to shut down 2G would require government approval.
