PM Oli emphasizes need to tackle emerging national security challenges

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed the need to address emerging security challenges by recognizing new dimensions in the national security sector.
Speaking at the 24th anniversary of the National Security Council Secretariat at Singha Durbar, PM Oli, who also chairs the council, highlighted that in addition to traditional security threats, the rapid development of information and technology has led to cybercrime, transnational crimes, climate change, drug abuse, and the misuse of social media, making national security more sensitive.
He pointed out that regional and international security dynamics are evolving, necessitating timely assessment and analysis to formulate appropriate strategies.
PM Oli underscored the importance of safeguarding the nation’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity through proper coordination and cooperation among relevant agencies, political parties, and stakeholders. He emphasized the need to adopt the “Whole of the Nation” approach for national security.
Nepal’s Constitution, under Part 28, outlines provisions for national security. Article 266 (1) mandates the formation of the National Security Council under the Prime Minister’s leadership to formulate security and defense policies and recommend the mobilization of the Nepal Army.
The National Security Council Secretariat was established on Falgun 27, 2058 BS and has been facilitating the council’s functions, providing recommendations, and preparing security analysis reports.
