KATHMANDU: A solemn tribute ceremony was held today in Sukhani, marking the martyrdom of five individuals during the Jhapa Uprising.
These five martyrs—Ram Nath Dahal, Netra Ghirmire, Biren Rajbanshi, Krishna Kuikel, and Narayan Shrestha—were executed by the then Panchayat regime on 21st Falgun 2029 BS, in a jungle near the Sukhani border, under the pretext of transferring them from Chandragadhi Prison to Ilam Jail.
Leaders and activists from the CPN (UML), CPN Maoist Centre, and CPN (Unified Socialist) paid their respects at the martyrs’ statues in Sukhani at different times throughout the day.
To honor their sacrifice, communist parties across Nepal observe 21st Falgun as Martyrs’ Memorial Day.
Statues of the Sukhani martyrs have also been erected in various places, including Jyamirghadi, Salbari, and Garamani in Jhapa, where similar tribute programs have been conducted by parties such as CPN (UML).
In Jyamirghadi, a memorial event was organized by CPN (UML) led by central member and former Constituent Assembly member, Rabin Koirala, at the Biren Rajbanshi Memorial Foundation.
The foundation premises feature a statue of martyr Biren Rajbanshi, and during the event, his eldest son, Netra Rajbanshi, daughter-in-law Bimala Rajbanshi, and other family members, along with Communist veteran Sano Durga Adhikari, who spent 17 years in harsh imprisonment during the uprising, were honored.
On 19th Falgun 2072 BS, the government officially recognized the five martyrs of the Jhapa Uprising as national martyrs.
