KATHMANDU: The ‘Women Filmmakers Empowerment Committee’ under the Film Development Board has launched the ‘Women’s Film Festival’ in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The festival, which began on Tuesday with the slogan ‘Women in Cinema,’ will run until Thursday.

On the opening day, the iconic Nepali film Sindur was showcased. Released in 1979 (BS 2036), Sindur is the second color film in Nepali cinema. It holds the record for being the first Silver Jubilee film, running for 52 consecutive weeks in cinemas across Kathmandu.

The film features notable actors like Bishwo Basnet, Gopalraj Manali, Basundhara Bhusal, and Nir Shah.

The event also included an interactive session with the film’s cast.

During the interaction, actress Basundhara Bhusal shared insights on the significant changes in the film industry.

She recalled the technical and practical challenges women filmmakers faced in the past but emphasized that these issues no longer exist today.

Bhusal also discussed how women in cinema were often subject to societal criticism but mentioned that those same critics now show respect and admiration.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol highlighted the need for more work on film policies. She mentioned that the municipality has chosen to focus on the film sector and believes that films can play a crucial role in the nationalization and internationalization of Nepal’s heritage and resources.

Dangol remarked, “Films are a powerful tool for national and international recognition of our heritage. We need to continue working on policy development in the film industry.”

On the second day of the festival, films created by women filmmakers will be screened, and the final day will include a ceremony to honor the contributions of female filmmakers.
