KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has announced that all southern border checkpoints, which were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, have now been reopened.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed Immigration Office building in Belhia, Bhairahawa, on Tuesday, Minister Lekhak highlighted that all southern border checkpoints from Pashupatinagar in the east to Mahakali in the west, including Kakarbhitta, are now operational, facilitating the flow of tourists.

He emphasized that the Belhia Immigration Office, due to its role in handling tourist arrivals, is the second-largest office in Nepal, following Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

He also stressed the need for further improvement and increased facilities at the office.

“Belhiya serves as a major entry point for tourists coming to Nepal, especially due to the significance of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. In recent days, tourist arrivals at all border points have increased, and we are working towards creating a more organized and tourism-friendly environment,” he said.

Minister Lekhak also underscored the importance of a courteous and efficient approach from staff and security personnel towards tourists and the general public, as immigration offices serve as the country’s gateway.

He further claimed that there are positive signs in the country’s economy, and in order to address current economic challenges and foster a better business environment, some ordinances have been issued.

These are expected to be passed in Parliament soon for implementation.
