Babar Mahal footpath revamp stalled, pedestrians struggle (photos)

KATHMANDU: The pedestrian walkway improvement project in the Babar Mahal area of Kathmandu is currently stalled, causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
The project, which includes the undergrounding of electrical wires along with the renovation and expansion of the footpath, has been halted, leaving the area in disarray.
Originally aimed at making pedestrian movement easier, the initiative has now left people struggling to walk along the road due to incomplete construction.
The Department of Roads had demolished the old structure for the footpath, but the work has been abandoned for several months.
Babar Mahal, a high-traffic area with significant footfall, especially due to its proximity to key locations like Singha Durbar and the District Court, sees daily visits from policy-makers and high-ranking officials.
The Department of Roads, which is located in the area, oversees the planning and execution of road maintenance and construction projects.
It is unfortunate that the condition of such an important locality remains poor.
The District Court, a key institution where citizens regularly come seeking justice, also shares this area.
However, the condition of the footpath remains dire, forcing pedestrians to walk along the roadside.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Electricity Authority’s ongoing underground cable installation work, although necessary, has delayed road improvement efforts and impacted the overall progress of the project.
