DHAKA: At least four people were killed in a devastating fire at a residential hotel in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday.

Talha Bin Jashim, the acting spokesperson for the Fire Service Media Cell, told journalists that the fire broke out on the first floor of the six-storey building at 12:31 p.m. local time.

He said several units of the firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 1:04 p.m. local time.

According to the official, panic stricken hotel guests and staff members tried to escape but were trapped in the rooms.

He said one of the bodies was recovered from a bathroom of the second floor and three others were recovered from the fifth floor, near the staircase leading to the roof.

Most of the victims died of suffocation as thick plumes of smoke caught them unawares, he mentioned.
