KATHMANDU: Since the beginning of the new fiscal year in mid-July, Kathmandu Valley has witnessed a tragic surge in traffic accidents, claiming the lives of 116 individuals, including 11 children.

As of Tuesday, a total of 152 others have sustained serious injuries, while 4,526 individuals have suffered minor injuries across 6,581 traffic accidents reported in the valley in the past seven and a half months, according to the valley traffic police.

The valley’s traffic office spokesperson, Sanjay Kumar Raut, provided further details, highlighting that motorcycles were responsible for the majority of these incidents, accounting for 3,727 accidents.

Cars followed closely behind, being involved in 1,749 accidents.

On a national scale, Nepal Police reported that from mid-January to mid-February, 199 individuals lost their lives in 2,906 traffic accidents across the country.

These accidents involved 4,535 vehicles.

The steady increase in such incidents underscores the need for better traffic safety measures and public awareness to address the growing concern of road-related fatalities and injuries.
