KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have called for effective security measures around temples, including Pashupatinath, during the Maha Shivaratri festival to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and vehicles.

Speaking during the special session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Ram Prakash Chaudhary of the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal highlighted the anticipated increase in devotees visiting Pashupatinath this year. He urged the government to prioritize security arrangements.

He also pointed out the poor condition of roads connecting the Kathmandu Valley and called for urgent maintenance. Additionally, Chaudhary stressed the need for a concrete action plan to remove Nepal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.

Meanwhile, Gangaram Chaudhary of the Nagarik Unmukti Party drew attention to the conservation of Ghodaghodi Lake and Temple in Kailali. Emphasizing the lake’s ecological importance, he urged the government to allocate a budget for its preservation.

Prem Suwal of the Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party blamed weak regulation of the cooperative sector for Nepal’s placement on the FATF grey list.

He also raised concerns over the widening trade deficit, the country’s public debt exceeding NPR 2.6 trillion, and the growing pollution in Kathmandu, which he warned is increasing the risk of respiratory and skin diseases.

Additionally, Suwal suggested making school and university education free of cost.

MP Javeda Khatun Jaga demanded an investigation into the death of student Prakriti Lamsal and called for measures to ensure student safety at her college.

She urged the Foreign Ministry to take necessary actions regarding the matter.
