CPN-UML MP accuses Former King Gyanendra Shah of undermining democracy
He criticized Shah’s message on Democracy Day, calling it an insult to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s democracy.

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML MP Thakur Prasad Gaire’s remarks against former King Gyanendra Shah have sparked controversy in Nepal’s political sphere.
Speaking during the special session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Gaire accused Shah of undermining democracy and attempting to poison the public’s view of the democratic system.
He criticized Shah’s message on Democracy Day, calling it an insult to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s democracy.
Gaire went on to assert that it was Shah’s actions, such as violating the constitution and imposing autocratic rule, that led to the collapse of the monarchy in Nepal.
He held Shah responsible for the end of the royal institution, which was replaced by the federal democratic republic.
The MP also took the opportunity to call for a shift in Shah’s stance, urging the former king to use the powers and privileges bestowed upon him by the current democratic system for the betterment of the country.
Gaire’s statements reflect the ongoing tensions between Nepal’s republican government and those who still hold royalist views.
The controversy continues to fuel the debate over Nepal’s political direction and the role of the monarchy in modern-day Nepalese society.
