Inspector Mahat’s death: Probe underway, two held

KATHMANDU: The investigation into the death of Armed Police Force (APF) Inspector Santoshi Mahat is ongoing, with authorities arresting APF Inspector Vivek Joshi in connection with the case.
Mahat was found hanging inside the Lamapatan barracks in Pokhara.
Following the incident, her family filed a complaint against Joshi, accusing him of abetting suicide.
According to DSP Basanta Sharma of the Kaski District Police Office, Joshi was taken into custody for further investigation.
Joshi, an inspector from Battalion No. 23 in Tanahun, was a member of the 16th Basic Training Batch.
The victim’s family claims Mahat and Joshi were in a romantic relationship and suspect his involvement in her death.
In response, the APF headquarters has formed an inquiry committee led by DIG Laxman Singh, who is currently stationed at the National APF Training Academy in Matatirtha.
Mahat, originally from Sindhupalchok, was an inspector from the 17th Basic Training Batch (2081 BS). She was undergoing riot control training at the Lamapatan barracks when she was discovered hanging from a beam near the women’s restroom.
Mahat joined the APF as a constable in 2072 BS, was promoted to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 2078 BS, and later secured the inspector rank in 2081 BS.
The exact cause of her death remains under investigation.
