KATHMANDU: Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has announced plans to demolish unauthorized structures and develop a Green Park in the Nhu Pokhari area.

On Monday, Mayor Chiribabu Mahajan initiated the demolition of illegal structures in the area, signaling the start of the project.

The Mayor emphasized the goal of transforming the area by removing physical structures to create a green and serene park. “We are working to beautify Nhu Pokhari and enhance greenery. This project is a fusion of green and blue, representing greenery and water, to create a state-of-the-art park,” Mahajan stated.

The Chief of Lalitpur Metropolitan City’s Municipal Police, Sitaram Hachhethu, assured that the area would be restored to its original state.

He mentioned that the project is expected to be completed by the end of the upcoming month of Asar. “By Asar 2082, we plan to finish this project, which will include a garden, a smart toilet, and restored pathways for pedestrian movement,” he said. The physical structures that had been built previously are being demolished following the Metropolitan City’s directive.

Vikasman Shrestha, Ward Chair of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Ward No. 5, revealed plans to relocate the ward office and restore the area to its historical form. “This is our historic New Pokhari, which is currently in disuse. We are working to preserve the pond and install a French bar for its restoration. According to the Municipal Council’s decision, the ward office, previously located behind Ward Malashri Building, will be moved, and efforts to restore the pond are underway,” Shrestha explained.

Once the park is completed, the Metropolitan City plans to create resting areas for the elderly and youth. Additionally, a large-scale fish farming project is also being proposed for the pond area.
