KATHMANDU: Ryan Rickelton’s brilliant century guided South Africa to a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their Champions Trophy.

Rahmat Shah top-scored with 90 off 92 balls, hitting nine fours and a six.

Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 18 runs each, while Gulbadin Naib managed 13.

Kagiso Rabada led South Africa’s bowling attack with three wickets, while Wiaan Mulder and Lungi Ngidi took two each. Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj claimed one wicket apiece.

Earlier, South Africa, opting to bat first at Karachi’s National Cricket Stadium, posted 315/6 in 50 overs.

Rickelton anchored the innings with 103 off 106 balls, smashing seven fours and a six, reaching his maiden ODI century in 101 deliveries.

Aiden Markram added a quickfire 52* off 36 balls, hitting six fours and a six, while skipper Temba Bavuma scored 58 off 76 balls.

Rassie van der Dussen contributed 52 off 46 deliveries, featuring three fours and two sixes. David Miller (14), Tony de Zorzi (11), and Marco Jansen (0) failed to make an impact.

For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi picked up two wickets, while Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad, and Azmatullah Omarzai claimed one each.

With this win, South Africa leads Group B with two points, while Afghanistan remains winless. The next Group B fixture will see Australia take on England on Saturday.

The Champions Trophy features the top eight teams from the 2023 ODI World Cup, divided into two groups. Group A includes Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, while Group B consists of Australia, Afghanistan, England, and South Africa.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.

The final is scheduled for March 9. If India qualifies, the match will be played in the UAE; otherwise, it will take place in Pakistan.
