Sudurpaschim reports 1,081 human rights violations in 2024

KATHMANDU: In 2024, a total of 1,081 incidents of human rights violations and excesses were reported in Sudurpaschim Province, according to the Nepal Human Rights Yearbook 2025.

This data was presented at a press conference held by the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) Sudurpaschim Province Office in Dhangadhi on Wednesday.

Khadkaraj Joshi, INSEC’s Province Coordinator, shared that 1,999 individuals across the province were affected by human rights violations and abuses in 2024.

The reported violations included 11 cases of human rights abuses—comprising one woman and 10 men—and 1,088 cases of excesses, involving 1,094 women and 34 men.

The report highlighted that the victims included 11 individuals from the state side, with two cases of beating, six of arrest, one death in jail, one death in custody, and one case of inhuman treatment.

Additionally, nine people were killed in beatings and assaults involving sharp-edged weapons, 11 others were injured, and 105 cases involved child rights violations.

There were also three instances of caste discrimination, 947 violations of women’s rights, two cases of inhuman treatment, eight instances of beating, and three cases of intimidation.

Joshi noted that the number of victims of human rights violations and intimidation in 2024 was lower than in 2023, with a decrease of 102 victims compared to the previous year.
