KATHMANDU: New Zealand secured a commanding 60-run victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the Champions Trophy at the National Cricket Stadium in Karachi.

Chasing a target of 321, Pakistan was bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. Khushdil Shah top-scored with 69, while opener Babar Azam contributed 64 runs. Salman Agha added 42 runs to the total.

For New Zealand, William O’Rourke and captain Mitchell Santner took three wickets each, while Matt Henry picked up two and Nathan Smith claimed one.

New Zealand’s Strong Batting Display

Earlier, New Zealand posted 320/5, powered by centuries from openers Will Young and Tom Latham.

Latham remained unbeaten on 118 off 104 balls, smashing 10 fours and 3 sixes. He completed his eighth ODI century in 95 balls.

Young played a crucial knock of 107 off 113 balls, hitting 12 fours and 1 six. He reached his fourth ODI hundred in 107 balls.

Latham and Glenn Phillips built a solid 125-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Phillips scored a quick 61 off 39 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes.

Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell contributed 10 runs each, while Kane Williamson was dismissed for just 1 run.

For Pakistan, Naseem Shah claimed two wickets, while Abrar Ahmed and Haris Rauf took one wicket each.

India to Play All Matches in UAE

Due to security concerns, the Indian team will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament and will play all their matches in the UAE.

The Champions Trophy features the top eight teams from the 2023 ODI World Cup, divided into two groups:

  • Group A: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand
  • Group B: Australia, Afghanistan, England, South Africa

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals. The final is scheduled for March 9.
