KATHMANDU: Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut emphasized the need to preserve history to make the present prosperous.

Speaking at the launch of the Nepal Law Journal (Old Edition), Supreme Court 2009, held in Kathmandu on Wednesday, he stated that it is crucial to protect and promote historical heritage.

He pointed out that these historical monuments are the pillars of the present and will guide the future by making the path easier and more defined.

He stated, “If we want to make the present prosperous, we must preserve our history. Historical heritage is the foundation of today’s reality. These heritage sites will help make the path to tomorrow easier, clearer, and more precise.”

Supreme Court Judge Hariprasad Phuyal mentioned that institutions responsible for enforcing laws and advocating legal supremacy in Nepal are becoming weaker.

He added that political commitment to strengthening institutions like the judiciary remains insufficient, which could be exploited by those with bad intentions. He emphasized that a strong legal system is necessary to fortify the nation, and the lessons of history could guide this effort.

Other speakers at the event expressed satisfaction over the delayed yet important work of documenting history.

They lamented the deterioration of writing practices that once ensured accurate records of judicial proceedings.

The speakers agreed that a nation or people who forget their history cannot progress, and they highlighted the necessity of linking national development with the preservation of history.
