KATHMANDU: Two security staff at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) hostel in Odisha, India, have been dismissed for allegedly mistreating Nepali students.
The action follows the suspicious death of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year BTech student from Butwal, Nepal, after protests from Nepali students demanding an investigation.
According to the university registrar, two senior hostel officers and a senior administrative officer from the International Relations Office were suspended for investigation.
The university had initially labeled Lamsal’s death as a suicide, but students expressed outrage, calling for a proper inquiry. Subsequently, a large number of Nepali students were expelled from the university.
Videos showing the abuse of students by university staff have also surfaced, prompting widespread criticism in both Nepal and India.
Amid growing pressure and condemnation, efforts are underway to bring the affected students back, and the university has begun disciplinary proceedings in response to the incident.
