KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has signed an agreement with the World Hemophilia Federation to provide free medication to patients suffering from hemophilia, a hereditary disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly.
According to the ministry’s private secretariat, the agreement was signed last Friday at the Department of Drug Administration.
Under this initiative, the federation will supply essential medicines, which the ministry will distribute through federal, provincial, and other government hospitals.
Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson for the ministry, stated that Nepal has identified around 900 hemophilia patients.
However, the World Health Organization estimates that nearly 5,000 cases remain undiagnosed in the country.
Based on the 2021 national census, 2.2% of the population has disabilities, with 0.8% possibly affected by hemophilia.
