KATHMANDU: A deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station has claimed the lives of 18 people, including 14 women and 3 children, while over 25 others have been injured, according to Dainik Bhaskar.

The chaos erupted as thousands of passengers gathered at the station for the Mahakumbh pilgrimage.

The situation worsened around 8:30 PM when three trains bound for Prayagraj were delayed, causing extreme overcrowding on platforms 13, 14, and 15.

Panic spread rapidly, triggering a stampede.

Following the tragedy, Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered an immediate investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Stampedes during the Mahakumbh pilgrimage have been frequent in the past. On January 29, a similar incident in Prayagraj claimed 30 lives, while on Feb 10, 2013, another stampede at Prayagraj railway station killed 36 people.

Authorities are now under pressure to enhance crowd management measures to prevent further tragedies.
