PARBAT, Kushma: A 99-year-old Bishnumati Damai’s joy knows no bounds. After living in complete darkness for two years, entirely dependent on others, she can now see again, thanks to a free cataract surgery camp.
Bishnumati lost her eyesight due to cataracts two years ago. “I started seeing blurry images around seven to eight years ago, and for the past two years, I saw nothing at all. Even managing daily meals was a struggle,” she said. Her granddaughter had been taking care of her.
After undergoing surgery at the free eye camp in Kushma, she expressed her gratitude to the doctors. “I never thought I would see the world again in this lifetime. I feared I would die without ever seeing my granddaughter’s face again. But now, I can see everything! Though my body is weak, I no longer feel like a burden to others.”
The free cataract surgery camp was organized at Province Hospital, Kushma, with technical support from the Himalaya Eye Hospital Pokhara, financial assistance from UK-based Raise Hope Foundation, and coordination with various Lions Clubs in Parbat.
According to Subash Nepal, coordinator of outreach programs at Himalaya Eye Hospital, the camp was part of a larger initiative across eight locations in Parbat district.
A total of 154 cataract patients, selected through free eye check-up camps, underwent surgery between Feb 11 and 13.
This life-changing initiative has restored sight to many elderly individuals, bringing hope and independence back into their lives.
