KATHMANDU: Mahanta Thakur, chair of the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), has asserted that no law, regulation, or guideline formulated by any local government can override the constitution.

Speaking at an event in Jaleshwar on Wednesday, he stated that any local law infringing upon citizens’ constitutional rights should be nullified automatically.

Thakur condemned the recent actions of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) against scrap dealers, accusing Mayor Balendra Shah of forcibly evicting them.

He alleged that KMC had defied court orders by demolishing scrap dealers’ properties, using municipal police to brutally assault business owners, and creating an atmosphere of fear.

Calling the crackdown an extreme violation of constitutional rights, Thakur urged the federal government to intervene.

He warned that if Mayor Shah does not change his approach, LSP will be compelled to launch a movement to defend citizens’ rights.
