KATHMANDU: A demonstration was held at Maitighar Mandala on Wednesday against controversial provisions in the proposed Social Media Act.
Protesters accused the government of drafting the law in a way that undermines fundamental rights to freedom of expression. They raised concerns over mandatory real-name registration for social media users, vague definitions of “obscene” and “hate speech” that could restrict artistic and creative expression, and excessive government surveillance of internet users.
They also criticized the disproportionate penalties for violations, the possibility of arbitrary enforcement due to the lack of judicial oversight, and restrictions on pseudonymous accounts.
Additionally, they warned that the law could discourage technological investments, posing a serious threat to citizens’ rights to free expression, information access, and privacy.
The demonstrators urged the government to engage in open discussions and amend the controversial provisions before the act is passed in Parliament.
