KATHMANDU: Bangladesh international cricketer Shohely Akhter has been handed a five-year ban from all forms of cricket after confessing to five violations of the ICC’s anti-corruption code, according to the sport’s governing body.

Akhter approached a fellow Bangladeshi player, offering her £13,000 ($16,000) to deliberately be dismissed hit wicket during the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.

The unnamed player reported the incident, even though Akhter was not involved in the tournament.

Najmul Abedin Fahim, director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and head of the women’s division, called Akhter’s actions “unfortunate.” He emphasized the board’s commitment to preventing match-fixing at all levels of Bangladesh cricket, saying, “We have zero tolerance in this regard.”

The 36-year-old left-arm spinner, who has played 13 T20 internationals and two ODIs for Bangladesh, last appeared for her country in 2022.

Among the charges, Akhter also admitted to obstructing or delaying the investigation into her actions.
