KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balen Shah has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office not to pursue charges against UML lawmaker Rekha Sharma from Lumbini Province.

The decision came after allegations that Sharma had employed a 14-year-old girl as a domestic worker for eight years.

Following the announcement that no case would be filed, Mayor Shah offered comfort to the victim.

On Facebook, Shah wrote, “Sorry Nanu, the government has decided not to press charges against your abuser. Don’t worry, time will come.” He also emphasized the importance of education to combat such exploitation, writing, “To end such discrimination, hide crimes, and stop offenders, many children like you must study and understand society.”

The decision not to file a case against Sharma was made by District Attorney Santosh Raj Katwal on Jan 31. The victim, who had accused Sharma of labor exploitation and abuse, reached out to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Based on her complaint, a rescue operation was carried out, and the girl was freed from Sharma’s residence in Baluwatar by a team from the city and other concerned authorities.
