KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress MP Deepak Giri has urged the government to provide swift justice to the agitating Swargadwari Guthi farmers.
Speaking during an emergency session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, he called on the government to fulfill its commitment to genuine tenant farmers.
“Swargadwari is a symbol of faith. The government must take an interest in its preservation and promotion,” Giri stated. The affected farmers have been protesting, claiming that despite receiving tenancy certificates, they have not been granted land ownership.
Giri further demanded an investigation into the Swargadwari Ashram’s lands in Dang, Deukhuri, and Ghorahi, which are reportedly being occupied by institutions or non-tenant farmers.
Meanwhile, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Hit Raj Pandey accused the government of disregarding parliamentary activities and ignoring the voices of people’s representatives. “Agenda items set for discussion have been repeatedly removed. Should Parliament merely follow the government’s directives, or should the government respect the decisions of elected representatives?” he questioned.
CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula, however, argued that the parliamentary rules allow for changes in the agenda, dismissing concerns over its alterations.
Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Shishir Khanal criticized the police for failing to investigate student leaders from ANNFSU who assaulted an on-duty officer while subjecting activist Ashika Tamang to 15 days of handcuffed detention for alleged misconduct.
“I often hear leaders expressing concern over youth migration. But if political student organizations enjoy immunity while independent youth activists face harsh treatment, what message are we giving? If the Home Minister cannot ensure the safety of his own police force, how can young Nepalis feel secure in this country?” Khanal remarked.
MPs Ganesh Parajuli, Sita Mizar, Sushila Sirpali Thakuri, and Dikpal Kumar Shahi also shared their views on contemporary issues during the session.
