KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched the ‘on-demand pedestrian crossings’ (Pelican system) at 36 locations to improve pedestrian safety.

Initially introduced in Babarmahal, the system has been expanded to various locations this fiscal year.

Jagatman Shrestha, traffic management advisor at the KMC Office, reported that while the system has been set up at 36 sites, it is currently operational at only 13.

Technical work is ongoing to make it fully functional at the remaining locations.

The Pelican system is now present in areas including Thamel, Maharajgunj, Naxal, Baluwatar, Gaushala, Exhibition Road, Bagbazar, and Tahachal.

The KMC has allocated Rs 20 million for the project this fiscal year.

The system allows pedestrians to activate a green signal at zebra crossings by pressing a button, which lasts for 30 seconds while vehicles are stopped with a red signal.

After 30 seconds, the system can be activated again after a two-minute wait.

The system is particularly focused on enhancing safety in areas near schools and hospitals.
