Man held for extorting money to release detainee from police custody

KATHMANDU: A man was arrested by the police for extorting money under the pretext of releasing a detainee from custody.
The arrested individual, 22-year-old Binod Dahal, also known as Aakash, is from Ward No. 6 of Inaruwa Municipality.
Dahal was arrested on charges of extorting money while posing as a police inspector, claiming he would secure the release of Heman Bhishwakarma, who was under custody at the Pakali Police Station during an ongoing drug-related investigation.
The arrest was made following an investigation led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Suman Timilsina.
It was revealed during the investigation that Dahal had collected a total of 25,000 rupees from Heman’s mother, Leela Bhishwakarma, promising her son’s release and further demanded an additional 15,000 rupees.
The police acted after a complaint was filed by the victim, and Dahal was caught while receiving the money at Lagauna, Ward No. 5 of Ramdhuni Municipality.
Police recovered 15,000 rupees and a mobile phone used by Dahal during the arrest.
Dahal is currently under investigation for fraud, and the district court in Sunsari has granted a seven-day remand for further inquiry.
