KATHMANDU: The Baglung District Administration Office currently holds 15,838 unclaimed National Identity Cards due to many recipients being abroad.

According to Ram Prasad Upadhyay, the head of the administration branch, most individuals filled out forms for their IDs but have not returned to collect them, as many have left for foreign countries.

While around 200 people visit daily to apply for new ID cards, only a small number of individuals, about 20 to 50 per day, come to collect their prepared cards, resulting in a backlog.

Upadhyay mentioned that as of now, 28,885 National ID cards have been prepared, but only 13,047 have been collected.

The rest remain in the administration’s custody.

The delay in distribution is due to the requirement that individuals must personally pick up their cards and undergo biometric verification again.

To address the backlog, the Baglung District Administration plans to hold a camp in Galkot Municipality for the distribution of the cards.

The large volume of uncollected cards is also causing storage issues at the administration office.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the validity of National Identity Cards, the government has made it mandatory for individuals to use these cards for all official purposes.

The digital cards, which include biometric data and a personal chip, will serve as comprehensive identification, replacing various documents such as citizenship certificates, licenses, voter ID cards, and land ownership records.

These cards will also track personal events from birth to death.

The National Identity and Registration Department has stated that all personal data will be systematically managed through an online system from birth onward.
