Minister Dahal highlights economic benefits of waterway transport

KATHMANDU: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, has emphasized that bringing 1,000-ton cargo ships from Hajipur to Devghat via the Gandak Barrage and Narayani River could yield significant economic benefits for Nepal.

Speaking at the National Assembly on Sunday during discussions on the Waterways Operation and Management Bill, 2081, Minister Dahal stated that it is technically feasible to transport large vessels from Kolkata to Devghat.

He asserted that such an initiative would be a milestone in Nepal’s water transport sector.

He further mentioned that similar cargo ships could also be introduced via the Koshi and Karnali rivers.

Highlighting Nepal-India cooperation, he revealed that both countries have already reached an agreement on this matter.

Additionally, he noted that several internal rivers in Nepal are viable for waterway transport.

The National Assembly commenced discussions on the Waterways Operation and Management Bill, 2081, on Sunday.
