KATHMANDU: As Valentine’s Week progresses, today marks the second significant day of the celebration – Propose Day.

Every year, Propose Day is observed on Feb 8, offering an ideal opportunity for individuals to express their feelings and confess their love to someone special.

This day is dedicated to those who wish to take a step forward in their romantic journey by making a heartfelt proposal to their beloved.

Many people gather the courage to express their emotions, hoping their love will be reciprocated.

However, while some proposals lead to beautiful relationships, others might face rejection. Regardless of the outcome, Propose Day encourages people to be honest about their feelings and embrace love with sincerity.

The History Behind Valentine’s Day

The roots of Valentine’s Day trace back to the story of Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who made a remarkable sacrifice in the name of love. The history of this day dates back to the Roman Empire, during the rule of Emperor Claudius II.

The emperor believed that unmarried soldiers were more focused and dedicated to war, whereas love and marriage distracted them from their military duties. As a result, he banned marriages among young soldiers.

However, Saint Valentine, a priest from the same era, strongly opposed this decree. He believed that love and devotion were divine virtues, and no ruler had the right to forbid them.

Defying the emperor’s orders, he secretly arranged marriages for young couples, encouraging them to cherish love despite the imposed restrictions.

His actions angered Emperor Claudius II, leading to his arrest and subsequent execution. On February 14, AD 270, Saint Valentine was sentenced to death for his defiance. Before his execution, he wrote a heartfelt letter to his beloved wife, Julia. The letter ended with the words: “From Your Valentine.” This phrase has since become synonymous with love and romance.

Symbolism of Almond Trees in Love

According to historical accounts, after Saint Valentine’s execution, his wife Julia planted an almond tree near his grave as a tribute to his unwavering love and sacrifice.

To this day, almond trees are considered a symbol of love and eternal devotion.

Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on Feb 14, honors Saint Valentine’s selfless acts of love.

The traditions associated with this day, including Propose Day, are a testament to his belief in the power of love and commitment.

As Propose Day continues to be celebrated worldwide, it reminds people to embrace love fearlessly and express their true emotions, regardless of the outcome.

Whether a proposal leads to a lasting relationship or not, the essence of love lies in the courage to express one’s feelings.
