KATHMANDU: A 39-year-old woman from Morang has undergone successful surgery to remove an 18.6 kg tumor from her ovary at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan.

The tumor, measuring 50 cm in size, was surgically removed by a team led by Dr. Ramesh Shrestha, Associate Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and a Gyneco-Oncology surgeon at the institute.

Generally, ovarian tumors refer to the uncontrolled growth of cells in the ovaries, which are reproductive organs in women. These tumors can occur in both the right and left upper parts of the uterus.

Ovarian tumors can be non-cancerous, precancerous, or cancerous. The woman had been struggling with difficulty walking, eating, and breathing for four months, in addition to facing financial hardships.

She had sought treatment in various cities including Biratnagar, Bharatpur, and Pokhara, but due to financial constraints and the complexity of surgery, she was unable to undergo treatment.

In light of her financial situation, the institute provided all tests, bed charges, and the surgery free of charge, as recommended by the Department Head, Prof. Dr. Achala Thakur. Dr. Abhijeet Kumar, the institute’s spokesperson, confirmed this.

The complex surgery was conducted by Dr. Shrestha, along with Prof. Dr. Pritha Basnet, Dr. Santosh Kumar Jha, Dr. Richa Bhattarai, and the anesthesia team led by Dr. Yogesh Dhakal.

The woman’s husband expressed his gratitude, thanking the entire medical team for successfully performing a seemingly impossible surgery and restoring his wife’s health.
