KATHMANDU: The 16th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, chaired by Prime Minister and Chair KP Sharma Oli, has decided to provide residential doctors studying in private medical colleges with a monthly allowance equivalent to that of government employees (8th level).

The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar, also decided to maintain the current allowance of Rs 48,700 for residential doctors based on discussions and reports received.

Further discussions will be held on other topics, and decisions are expected to be made in upcoming meetings. The commission also addressed the issue of private colleges charging an annual fee of Rs 23 lakh from students who refuse to sign a two-year study and work agreement.

Currently, private medical colleges offer a monthly allowance of Rs 20,000. Postgraduate students have been protesting for equal benefits, which was impacting the commission’s examinations. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Oli, efforts have been made to resolve the issue.

During the meeting, the President of the Private Medical College Association, Dr. Gyanendra Man Singh Karki, requested that decisions be made after the procedures are finalized.

However, the commission, led by Prime Minister Oli and co-chairs Health Minister Pradeep Paudel and Minister of Education, Science, and Technology Vidya Bhattarai, reiterated their commitment to providing equal facilities for residential doctors.

The meeting also discussed the need for amendments to the National Medical Education Act, 2075, to streamline regulatory processes for medical education, monitoring, entrance exams, student seat allocations, and tuition fees.
