KATHMANDU: The ongoing protest against the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara region of Taplejung has been suspended following an agreement between the Home Ministry’s negotiation team and representatives of opposing organizations.

Tensions had escalated after protests led to a transport shutdown across nine districts in the Arun East region.

Various committees, including the Mukkumlung Conservation Joint Struggle Committee and the Cable Car Cancellation Struggle Committee, had expressed strong opposition to the project.

A meeting held at the Himalayan Hotel in Lalitpur on Monday and Tuesday resulted in a breakthrough.

Protesters agreed to suspend their agitation after authorities decided to halt construction work above the planned cable car station and hold further discussions on the station’s location in upcoming negotiations.

The government also agreed to provide free and effective medical treatment to those injured during the protests, investigate the Janu 25 incident, and take legal action if necessary.

Additionally, authorities committed to immediately releasing all detained protesters without conditions.

With this agreement, the indefinite transport strike has been called off, and both parties will hold another round of talks on Feb 9 to address further disagreements regarding the Pathibhara Cable Car project.
