First medical evacuation from Gaza in 8 months
Patients from Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital and Khan Younis' Nasser Medical Complex were transported by bus to the border crossing.
KATHMANDU: A group of injured and ailing Palestinians has been evacuated from Gaza through the Rafah crossing for medical treatment abroad—the first such instance in eight months.
Patients from Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital and Khan Younis’ Nasser Medical Complex were transported by bus to the border crossing.
According to Gaza’s hospital director, Mohammad Zakout, a list of 50 patients scheduled for evacuation was submitted to the authorities on Friday.
World Health Organization (WHO) representatives were present at the hospitals to assist with the evacuation.
Gaza’s healthcare system has been severely crippled by the ongoing 15-month war between Israel and Hamas, with hospitals facing critical shortages of medical supplies and widespread destruction of facilities.
WHO has urgently called for the resumption of medical evacuations, as an estimated 15,000 patients in Gaza require treatment outside the enclave.
