Arsenal thrash Man City 5-1, close gap on Liverpool

KATHMANDU: Arsenal stunned Manchester City with a resounding 5-1 victory in the English Premier League on Sunday, closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool.

Martin Ødegaard, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz, and Ethan Nwaneri all found the net for Arsenal, while Erling Haaland scored City’s lone goal.

Ødegaard put Arsenal ahead just two minutes into the game. Haaland equalized in the 55th minute, but Arsenal responded immediately, with Partey restoring their lead just a minute later. City crumbled from there.

Lewis-Skelly extended Arsenal’s lead in the 62nd minute, scoring his first senior goal for the club. Havertz struck in the 76th minute, and Nwaneri sealed the emphatic win in stoppage time.

Arsenal now sit second with 50 points from 24 matches, six points behind Liverpool, who have played one game fewer.

City, with 41 points, have dropped to fourth. Chelsea could overtake them if they beat West Ham on Monday.

Manchester United endured yet another setback, losing 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored both goals, striking in the 64th minute and again in the 89th.

Elsewhere, Tottenham secured their first win in eight league games, beating Brentford 2-0.

Crystal Palace now sit 12th with 30 points, while United have slipped to 13th with 29 points from 24 matches.

Tottenham, on 27 points, are 14th, while Brentford hold 11th place with 31 points.
