Driver of vehicle involved in accident in Okhaldhunga held from Bhaktapur

The accident claimed the lives of three family members, and the driver had fled the scene.

KATHMANDU: The driver involved in a fatal road accident in Okhaldhunga has been arrested from Bhaktapur.

On Thursday, a vehicle with registration number NA 1 Ja 6421 was discovered in a crashed condition near a riverbank in Manebhanjyang Rural Municipality-4.

The accident claimed the lives of three family members, and the driver had fled the scene.

The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Maya Devi Gurung, 28-year-old Pujan Gurung, and 45-year-old Tara Gurung from Keplisagadhi Rural Municipality, according to DSP Krishna Khadka from the District Police Office in Okhaldhunga.

Four people, including the driver, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. After the driver went missing from the scene, a search operation was launched.

The 22-year-old driver, Anil Pandit, was believed to be in Kavre, and after inquiries at the Shree Memorial Hospital in Banepa, police discovered he had been admitted to the Bhaktapur International Hospital.

He was apprehended by the police while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Pandit sustained injuries to his hands, face, and chest, and he is currently undergoing treatment.

Although the police have not yet questioned him regarding the incident, initial investigations suggest that the accident occurred between 1:30 and 2:00 AM.

The vehicle was traveling from Diktel to Kathmandu to bring Maya Devi Gurung for medical treatment.

The vehicle left at around 10:00 PM, and the accident likely occurred shortly after. Local residents reported the crash in the morning, and the vehicle had fallen approximately 100 meters off the road.

Further investigations are ongoing.
