KATHMANDU: At least 40 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River after a mid-air collision between a commercial airplane and a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport, CNN reported. Rescue operations are ongoing.

The crash involved an American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 64 passengers and crew, and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter with three military personnel.

The two aircraft collided at around 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday, causing both to plunge into the river.

Authorities believe there are no survivors. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Experts suggest that separate radio frequency systems used by Washington Air Traffic Control may have played a role in the disaster.
