KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Acting General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali has assured that the proposed bill on social media operation, usage, and regulation will be revised based on discussions with the parliament and media stakeholders.
Speaking at the sixth district convention of Press Chautari Nepal, Lalitpur, Gyawali stated that the bill aims to ensure responsible use of social media.
He emphasized that social platforms should serve as a space for clean entertainment and information exchange. While constructive criticism is always welcome, he argued that acts such as offering tributes to living individuals are unacceptable.
Reaffirming his party’s commitment to press freedom, Gyawali stated that democracy should bring positive changes in people’s lives.
During the event, Press Chautari Nepal’s Vice Chair Rajesh Rai and General Secretary Hiramana Lama stressed that social media regulations should not be used as a pretext to suppress press freedom.
The convention elected a 13-member new working committee, chaired by Naveen Luintel.
Additionally, the event honored Nepal Press Editor-in-Chief Matrika Paudel and journalist Bishnu Kalpit with the Press Chautari Active Journalism Award.
