KATHMANDU: The Tamang community is celebrating Sonam Lhosar, marking the beginning of their new year.

A grand cultural festival was organized at Tundikhel on Thursday, where members of the Tamang community gathered to observe the occasion.

Participants embarked on a procession from Ratnapark to the venue, dressed in traditional attire and playing the damphu drum, adding vibrancy to the celebrations.

The National Sonam Lhosar Main Ceremony Committee hosted the event, bringing together people from across the country.

Sonam Lhosar falls on the first day of the lunar calendar’s Magh Shukla Pratipada and is a time for ancestral worship, nature reverence, and remembrance of Buddha’s teachings.

Families and friends come together to exchange greetings and enjoy festive gatherings.

In addition to the Tamang community, ethnic groups such as Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nyesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha also celebrate the festival in their unique ways.

This year, the transition from the Rabbit year to the Garuda year is taking place.

Sonam Lhosar follows a 12-year cycle, named after animals including Mouse, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Pig.
