KATHMANDU: Martyrs’ Day is being observed across the country today in remembrance of those who gave their lives for democracy and national welfare.
Celebrated every year on Magh 16, the day is marked by various programs that honor the bravery and sacrifices of individuals who fought for freedom at different times in history.
The occasion pays special tribute to national heroes such as Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, along with countless other martyrs who played a vital role in Nepal’s democratic movements.
In addition, Martyrs’ Week, observed from Magh 10 to 16, is organized by several organizations to commemorate those who opposed the oppressive Rana regime and sacrificed their lives for the cause.
In 1997, Shukra Raj Shastri was executed at Pachali, Teku, on Magh 10, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Shifal on Magh 13, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15, all at the hands of the Rana rulers for advocating independence.
In the meantime, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has also observed the day with various programs.
The metropolis organized a rally from Shanti Batika to the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur, where floral tributes were offered.
Although martyrs are remembered every year on this day, concerns persist that the necessary actions to fulfill their aspirations remain incomplete.
Despite this, responsible officials continue to express their commitment during formal ceremonies to realizing the dreams of the martyrs.
