Govt to provide stipend to resident doctors in private medical colleges

KATHMANDU: The government has announced that resident doctors pursuing postgraduate studies in private medical colleges will now receive a stipend.
The decision was jointly signed and made public on Monday night by Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Vidya Bhattarai, and Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Paudel.
As per the decision, resident doctors in private medical colleges will receive a stipend of at least Rs 25,000 in the first year, Rs 30,000 in the second year, and Rs 35,000 in the third year.
This policy will be implemented starting from the academic session 2081/82 (2025/26).
The decision follows the 15th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, chaired by Prime Minister and Commission Chair KP Sharma Oli, on Mangsir 9, 2081 (Nov 24, 2024).
The meeting had assigned the responsibility of resolving issues related to stipends in private medical colleges to the Education and Health Ministers.
Based on multiple discussions with stakeholders, the ministers finalized and announced the decision.
The statement also highlighted that private medical colleges must provide resident doctors with decent remuneration and benefits as per university guidelines, the Nepal Medical Council, and existing labor laws.
