KATHMANDU: Achham police have detained two individuals for questioning in connection with the deaths of two teenage girls.
The suspects, both under 20 years of age, were apprehended on Sunday evening from Dhakari Rural Municipality.
The deceased, Saraswati Khadka (15) and Ishara Khadka (14) from Dhakari-8, were discovered dead in suspicious circumstances on Saturday evening in Sungar Community Forest, Dhakari-1.
The girls had left home on Friday morning to graze goats and had been out of contact since.
Family members suspect foul play, alleging that the girls were murdered.
Their bodies were found mutilated and in separate locations. Both victims belonged to the same family, with Saraswati and Ishara being aunt and niece, respectively.
Based on information provided by the family, police detained the two suspects.
A joint team, including District Police Office Chief DSP Ishwari Prasad Bhandari and Chief District Officer Shiv Prasad Lamsal, visited the incident site on Sunday.
However, authorities have yet to determine whether the incident was an accident or a homicide.
The bodies were initially brought to the District Hospital Achham for post-mortem examinations but were later sent to Nepalgunj for further analysis due to the severity of the case.
“We inspected the site and returned, but the cause of death remains unclear,” said DSP Bhandari. “The post-mortem will provide more clarity on the incident.”
