KATHMANDU: The 9th edition of the Gorkhali Running Cup will begin on Feb 19 in Gorkha district, known for offering the highest cash prizes in the region.

The competition winner will receive Rs 400,000, while the runner-up will be awarded Rs 200,000, as announced by the event’s organizer, Harmatari Club, during a press conference on Wednesday.

The event aims to promote local talent, enhance Gorkha’s visibility through sports, and prevent athletes from migrating for better opportunities.

According to Harmatari Club’s General Secretary, Kiran Dhakal, while organizations like ANFA and the District Sports Development Committees exist, they do not organize such events. “As long as Harmatari Club is active, we will continue to organize this competition,” Dhakal stated.

The competition, set to run from February 19 to 26, will feature 16 teams, including national-level clubs and local teams from Gorkha.

The event will be held at the Harmatari Sports Ground, with an estimated cost of Rs 2.76 million for organizing.

In addition to the main prizes, various awards will be distributed, including Rs 35,000 for the most disciplined team, Rs 25,000 for the best player, and Rs 15,000 each for the best goalkeeper and top scorer.

Emerging players will receive Rs 10,000, and each “Player of the Match” will earn Rs 2,500.

Tickets for general matches are priced at Rs 50, while semi-final and final matches will cost Rs 100.
